Kalyn was able to participate in LTC (Leadership Training for Christ) this year and had a wonderful experience. I was also the coach for the kids who chose to do the signing event at the convention in Houston. Kalyn chose to do scrapbooking, community service, Bible Bowl, and signing for the Deaf. Scrapbooking and community service were done prior to the convention and every Wednesday night (since around Oct/Nov) at church the kids worked hard on learning all the information they could about Revelation for the Bible Bowl as well as learning how to sign their selected song. It all paid off.
Since Kalyn was involved in LTC this year and I was coaching the signing event, Ricky and I decided we would help chaperone on the trip to Houston for the convention. We met the church van in Lexington and headed to the "big city" early on Friday afternoon. With 19 of us on the trip, we only had to make one stop...yeah! Traffic was a BEAR when we got to the outskirts of Houston, but we made it to downtown in good time. We got everyone checked in and settled in the hotel rooms, checked in at the registration table, and ate pizza before the first event...Bible Bowl. Kalyn and her friends did very well in their event...and the questions were HARD!! I didn't know at least half of the answers myself!! After the Bible Bowl, there was a devo for everyone which was fun with a lot of singing and a good talk. Bedtime soon followed as we had to get up before 6am the next morning!!
Saturday morning came quickly as the alarm went off at 5:45am. We got dressed and ready to meet the group to get some breakfast before the signing event at 8:30am. There wasn't anything cheap enough at the hotel so we walked a few blocks from the hotel to McDonald's. We got a good workout! :o) After our walk back to the hotel we headed to the convention center (connected to the hotel) to get the kids to the right room for their signing event. We had three beginner signers (Gabby, Danielle, and Kalyn) competing around 9:15ish. Gabby and Danielle signed "Soon and Very Soon" while Kalyn did "We Shall Assemble." All three did a beautiful job and I was very proud of them. The girls were RELIEVED to be done and felt good about themselves. Kalyn was glad to have her dad, his girlfriend, Karen, and her brother, Braeden, come watch her. They were all impressed with Kalyn of course! Since the elementary kids were done with their events, a few other chaperones took them swimming while Ricky and I went to watch Allen compete in his signing event at 10:20...he did an AWESOME job signing "We Shall Assemble!!" I am going to have to persuade him somehow to continue learning more signs so he can help interpret on Sunday mornings...ha! With being done sooner than we expected and two more teens competing right after lunch we decided to head to Chick-fil-a which was so good! Ricky and I hurried back to the hotel with the other teen girls, Rebecca and Ginny, to watch them do their signing. Rebecca did a good job with "We Shall Assemble" and Ginny did a fantastic job with "Listen to Our Hearts" and Revelation 5:1-5. Ginny decided to try for intermediate level this year and I am so glad she did because she needed the challenge...I am very proud of her! Everyone was done with all their events by 1:30, but we had to stay for a couple more hours before the awards could be picked up. Kalyn and Sheldon's dad had invited us to come to his new place so the kids could show me and Ricky where they stay when they come to Houston. We decided that since we had some time to kill that we would leave the group for a little while and go do that...and I'm glad we did because we had a good visit. It was good to see them in their environment in Houston and know where they will be. When we returned to the hotel, we joined the group and watched a couple more events then picked up our awards and displays. Finally we pulled out of the parking garage and headed back home. But the fun didn't end just yet...we made one more stop to eat supper. They all say they decided to stop at a mexican restaurant in Brenham just because some pregnant lady wanted mexican food...ha! The food was very good and the fellowship was even better. Ricky and I really enjoyed getting to know the other three couples who went on the trip with us as well as all the kids. Sheldon was just glad that one of his friends went also...and he was SILLY and had so much fun. We are looking forward to next year and know that God will bless our youth once again.
